GTO Gate Openers are dependable gate operators for automatic slide and automatic swing gate systems. But what do you when your gate opener stops working?

Always make sure you have continuity first.  That is make sure all the wiring is connected and terminations are tight, nothing come off or out of their designated terminal.  Then check your GTO Battery for voltage which is typically a 12v 7amp battery.  These batteries will typicallt read around 13 volts but always check the battery wiht a volt ohm meter while the gate is moving if possible.  The battery voltage will drop under load and if it drops to low its time to replace it.  I always recommend replacing the batteries yearly.  Sure they will last longer but they are not too expensive and why take a chance.  If your GTO PRO gate operator has 2 batteries replace both at the same time.

Check you transformer.  Depending on the GTO model you have the voltage may be diferent. Since the transformer is what keeps the batteries charged it is important that the charger work properly.  Without knowing Ohms Law, or having a high level understanding of watts, amps, ohms and volts you can perform these simple tests on the battery and transformer of your GTO PRO Gate Operator.

Always make sure that the gate itself is working properly.  A swing gate should be level or plumb and swing easily and stay in position.  A slide gate should roll easily.  The GTO PRO gate opener is designed to open and close a properly installed and properly working gate, so all worn out or damaged gate hardware or chain should be replaced or repaired.

Let's give an example of some LED / Audible indicators on the GTO PRO 2000XLS Gate Opener

If the Power Light is GREEN then the circuit board is receiving AC or Solar pwer, if the light is not on there is no power.  Check the battery, solar panel, transformer and wire connections

There is a YELLOW led indicator.  This LED provides a few bits of information.  If the unit is running it should be off, If it is blinking rapidly in no specific pattern it is reacting to someone pushing a remote RB741 or F310 Wireless Keypad.  If it is on solid, the battery is in a fast charge mode and if it is blinking once every 2 seconds the battery is fully charged and being maintained.

An audible beep when the control board is powered up with the operator connected is normal, it's self test mode.  If you hear a continuous beep the unit has learned a new remote code and it is time to release the button on the remote.

If you hear rapid beeping the GTO 2000XLS Gate Opener has 2 obstructions and the actuator arms have not reached their limits., remotes will not open or close the gate.  The alarm will continue for 5 minutes and shut off.  The gate will remain in a disabled state unitl the control box is re-set.

GATE LOCKS! - Gate Locks are a important accessory to any automatic slide gate operator or any electric driveway gate operator systems.

The electric gate operator system is designed to open and close your gate.  This is great for controlling access to the premises and also allowing you to open and close the gate without getting out of the vehicle.  Great for hot, cold, rainy or snowy days when you don't want to have to manually open your gate! 

Many gate Operators such as the GTO SL200B Slide gate opener 

have a built in brake which prevents the GTO Gear Motor from reversing unless access is authorized by use of a keyday, remote or entry system. 

Most Swing Gate Operators such as the GTO Pro 4000XLS Swing Gate Operator, The Apollo 1650 Swing Gate Operator, LA400 Swing Gate Operator, LA500 Swing Gate Operator and others stop in the closed position to keep the gate closed.

However; driveway gates should not be considered completly secured simply due to having a automatic gate system.  The addition of a Gate Lock should be considered for most automatic gate system installations. The Gate Lock secures the gate closed and prevents electric slide gate operators from being forced open and possibly damaging the operator gears and it prevents electric swing gate operators from being pushed open and possibly damaging the actuator arms or in the case of a pad mounted swing gate operator prevent damage to the articulating arm attached to the gate.

There a various models of gate locks.  You may select a Magnetic lock 

or a electro mechanical lock.  A Magnetic or Mag Lock requires constant power and secures the gate closed by a very stronge magnetic lock.  These locks typical require over 1000 pounds of force to gain unauthorized access.  Mag locks are a great choice!.  Be sure you always specify if the mag loc is for a swing or slide gate.  And if you are using it for a slide gate you will need the LZ bracket option as well.  Do not use a mag lock if power outages are an issue as the lock releases during power outages.

The next type of lock is the electro mechanical gate lock.  These locks are generally used for swing gates.  They are easy to install and work well.  in the even of a power failure they continue to hold the gate closed.  You can release the gate by removing the security pin.
